Great article! The thank you's I got from my kindergarten through second-grade special ed students made me cry. The way my nonverbal kids thanked me would be to smile, hug me, or light up and laugh. Now, I'm teaching privately and have some secondary students. It's a whole new experience to have my students be able to tell me how I've helped them. Even though they can tell me how they feel, what warms my heart the most is when they show up for a lesson (on a skill that has historically been hard for them) because they want to be there.
